Personal Details: Herbert was the son of Bernard John and Lucy Maria Farrelly of Eton, Mackay Queensland.

Enlistment Details: Herbert enlisted on the 29th October 1916, in his home town of Eton, Queensland.  He was posted to the 9th reinforcement of the 52nd Battalion.

Details about his role in War:

The 52nd battalion was made up of veterans from the 12th battalion and fresh reinforcements from Australia (mostly from Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania)

Herbert embarked from Sydney on 24th January 1917, then Disembarked Devonport on the 12th April 1917.

He proceeded to France on the 13th August 1917, and was taken on strength just short of a month later on 1st September.

Sadly Herbert was killed in action on the 21st October 1917. The 52nd Battalion was subject to heavy shelling as it moved out of Ypres further back from the front after being in the front line at Broodseinde Ridge for some time.
